Radish, not rabbit - Why we are vegetarians

In young urban surroundings, being vegetarian is nothing uncommon. But it has been when I decided to stop eating animals at age 11 in rural Germany – it took me several years to see that there is actually a movement behind that idea. And it has been uncommon on the vessel of the Japanese NGO Peace Boat, where only a minority considered themselves vegetarians. Still, there was a big interest in the idea, so we decided to organise some events on the topic. We had three Latin American activists of Friends of the Earth onboard, who were vegetarians themselves. They could not be in the event, but had their guest appearance in this video. Why do they abstain from eating animals, what is it like to be vegetarian in meet-loving Argentina, Chile or Brasil and what is their message. Find out in this interview clip (in Spanish)!

People face environmental challenges everywhere in the world, but often there are surprisingly simple solutions at hand - if only we are aware of them and willing to change. Five activists from all over the world, who took part in the UEM workshop „Peace with the Earth“ in Medan/ Indonesia in 2012, talk about the environmental problems that concern them most and how they themselves became active to solve them. Hear their testimonies about garbage in Indonesia, logging in Tanzania, mining in the Philippines, open brown coal pits in Germany and erosion in Rwanda.

Hula ohne Hoop - Hawai'i in Kreuzberg

Hula - isn't it that kid's game with the plastic hoop? Or those aloha girls shaking their hips and coconut bras? No way: Traditional Hula Dance is as far away from these exotic stereotypes as Honolulu is from Europe. Few people know Hula 'Ōlapa as the powerful dance it is, the dance by which Hawaians assure themselves of their cultural identity. It is their History book, their religion, their ally in fighting the US-domination on their island. Monika Lilleike is one of the few foreigners who have been accepted by an Hawaian hula master to teach and reinvent the sacred dance herself - in the bustling metropolis of Berlin, of all things...



Ursprünglicher Hula ist vom Kinderspiel mit dem Plastikreifen so weit entfernt wie Honolulu von Berlin-Kreuzberg. Im Hula 'Ōlapa versichern sich die Hawaianer ihrer kulturellen Identität. Der kraftvolle Tanz ist ihr Geschichtsbuch, ihre Religion, ihr Bündnis im Widerstand gegen die jahrhundertelange Bevormundung durch die Vereinigten Staaten. Als eine der wenigen Fremden ist die Namibianerin Monika Lilleike in den Bund der Pazifikinsel aufgenommen worden. Heute erfindet sie die Tradition ihres Meisters neu - am Strand der Spree.

Safari zum Kirchentag - 200 Kenianer in Bremen

Die größte internationale Gruppe auf dem Kirchentag kommt nicht etwa aus Europa, sondern aus dem ostafrikanischen Kenia. Gladys Kanuu Gitonga, 47, ist aufgeregt, denn es ihre erste Auslandsreise. Ein ganzes Jahr lang hat sie für die teure Fahrt gespart; ihr Visum reicht nur für eine Woche.

EJP kam 2002 aus Haiti nach Europa, weil er sich in Frankreich ein besseres Leben versprach. Seine Bilder sind farbenfroh und voller Nostalgie - eine Reminiszenz an seine verlassene Heimat. Doch erstmals mischen sich europäische Elemente in seine karibischen Szenen, die mittlerweile bei ARTE und im Europaparlament hängen: Seine haitianischen Tänzerinnen zeigen Positionen des klassischen Balletts... Wie sie verinnerlicht EJP zwei gegensätzliche Kulturen, die sich mal abstoßen, mal ein Ganzes ergeben. Was ihm die Zukunft bringt, ob er zurückkehren wird oder hier die erhoffte Selbstständigkeit findet - er weiß es nicht.
